Happy New Year

Back again, and ready for 2007. (nice holiday - no nights spent sleeping in the airport among other things). Speaking of 2007, this is a really good fearless forcast blog entry from ZD net.

The one that caught my eye was the Microsoft - Novell comment, which basically said that the mixed source world is here to stay, and that if Microsoft and Novell can make the co-existance better, then customers will approve. The implied focus of this comment was on the technical side, but I believe that the IP side is also something that customers will increasingly appreciate. There has been plenty of debate around the announcement, most of it negative, but if these two companies actually get to work and deliver work that has real value to customers, then I think that the opinion of the deal will shift.

My comment not surprisingly lines up with our business here at palamida. I think 2007 will be a year when an increasing number of firms realize that they are best served by a mix of open source and proprietary code - and that building an accurate inventory of what code they use, where they use it, and what obligations regarding it use they have is part of a modern IT environment.
