Couple of thoughts on this...First, it has always been the case that people will go to extraordinary lengths for a freebee. For example - tee shirts. But on a more interesting level...maybe thats where we are headed with some part of the OSS world. I have always thought that making software products is a bit like making a movie (or at least what I think it must be like to make a movie). You need a crew of permanent people to be the infrastructure, and then you contract with people whose skills match what you need at the moment - for example, the best guy for a nighttime explosion special effect. Could it be that software firms will go in that direction in a more structured way? Whether for points, cash, Xboxes etc...we could see OSS grow more quickly as people increasingly find ways to do what they enjoy - collaborate for the creation of great software, with the ability to support themselves doing it.
