Thank You for Flying with Us

I couldn't help but smile at this...openlogic has started an Xbox giveaway in exchange for open source work. More here. Couple of thoughts on this...First, it has always been the case that people will go to extraordinary lengths for a freebee. For example - tee shirts. But on a more interesting level...maybe thats where we are headed with some part of the OSS world. I have always thought that making software products is a bit like making a movie (or at least what I think it must be like to make a movie). You need a crew of permanent people to be the infrastructure, and then you contract with people whose skills match what you need at the moment - for example, the best guy for a nighttime explosion special effect. Could it be that software firms will go in that direction in a more structured way? Whether for points, cash, Xboxes etc...we could see OSS grow more quickly as people increasingly find ways to do what they enjoy - collaborate for the creation of great software, with the ability to support themselves doing it.
